Whether you plan to seed your next project, install plant plugs, or use a combination of both seed and plant plugs, please use this chart as a general guideline to help you to determine the appropriate species and planting zones. This chart lists a selection of native plant species which may be appropriate to plant in the indicated zones. The actual plant species selected for your project site will depend on a number of factors.
Please remember that species selection and installation technique depend upon soil type, slope, water level, plant material and the prevailing site conditions at time of installation. Furthermore, within a planting zone, the depth at which you install bare root materials or plant plugs depends on the vegetative growth of the planting stock. If you plan to install emergent plant stock in deep waters, the material you plant must have sufficient vegetative growth to extend out of the water once planted. Most species will spread beyond the installed water depth. Certain species will spread into deeper waters, some will spread into shallower waters and some will do both. Many native plants are deep rooted and provide significant slope stabilization, thereby reducing soil erosion.
